The Dark Knight – Summary – Video

0Christopher Nolan steps back into the director’s chair for this sequel to Batman Begins, which finds the titular superhero coming face to face with his greatest nemesis — the dreaded Joker. Christian Bale returns to the role of Batman, Maggie Gyllenhaal takes over the role of Rachel Dawes (played by Katie Holmes in Batman Begins), and Brokeback Mountain star Heath Ledger dons the ghoulishly gleeful Joker makeup previously worn by Jack Nicholson and Cesar Romero. Just as it begins to appear as if Batman, Lt. James Gordon (Gary Oldman), and District Attorney Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart) are making headway in their tireless battle against the criminal element, a maniacal, wisecracking fiend plunges the streets of Gotham City into complete chaos.

“In The Dark Knight, Batman raises the stakes in his war on crime. With the help of Lieutenant Jim Gordon and District Attorney Harvey Dent, Batman sets out to dismantle the remaining criminal organizations that plague the city streets. The partnership proves to be effective, but they soon find themselves prey to a reign of chaos unleashed by a rising criminal mastermind known to the terrified citizens of Gotham as The Joker.”

With just one year having passed after taking out Ra’s Al Ghul’s plan to have Gotham eliminated and the mysterious disappearance of Dr. Jonathan Crane AKA the Scarecrow, and after the city was nearly plundered with his toxins, Bruce Wayne and his vigilante alter-ego the Batman, continue the seemingly endless effort to bring order to Gotham, with the help of Lt. James Gordon and newly appointed District Attorney Harvey Dent. But a new threat has now emerged into the streets. The Dark Knight faces a rising psychopathic criminal called The Joker, whose eerie grin, laughter, and inhuman morality makes him as dangerous than what he has yet to unleash. It becomes an agenda to Batman to stop the mysterious Joker at all costs, knowing that both of them are in an opposite line. One has no method at all and seeks to see the world plunge into the fire he has yet to light. One represents the symbol of hope and uses his own shadow to bring the peace and order he has yet to accomplish doing.

Set within a year after the events of Batman Begins, Batman, Lieutenant James Gordon, and new district attorney Harvey Dent successfully begin to round up the criminals that plague Gotham City until a mysterious and sadistic criminal mastermind known only as the Joker appears in Gotham, creating a new wave of chaos. Batman’s struggle against the Joker becomes deeply personal, forcing him to “confront everything he believes” and improve his technology to stop him. A love triangle develops between Bruce Wayne, Dent and Rachel Dawes.

The behind-the-scenes creative team includes two-time Oscar-nominated director of photography Wally Pfister, Oscar-nominated production designer Nathan Crowley (The Prestige), Oscar-nominated editor Lee Smith and Oscar-winning costume designer Lindy Hemming (Topsy-Turvy). The music is by Oscar winner and multiple Oscar nominee Hans Zimmer (The Lion King, Gladiator) and seven-time Oscar nominee James Newton Howard (Michael Clayton, The Fugitive), who previously collaborated on the score for Batman Begins.

Nolan’s Plans for “Dark Knight” Sequel

•December 1, 2008 • Leave a Comment

christopher-nolanChristopher Nolan, director of The Dark Knight still won’t commit to the sequel yet, here’s why.

When he spoke to USA Today, he also dropped tidbits about the further future of his Batman franchise. In a nutshell, he’s not in a rush to do another one.

He’s jotted down some notes and done some rough outlines for Batman 3, but hasn’t found anything to commit to. But he’s more concerned with getting it right than getting another one done. He says, “I wouldn’t want to do one if it weren’t going to be as good as the first or second. That’s not respectful to the fans.” He wants to keep Batman viable by not going Batman & Robin again. “The worst thing you could do now that you’ve gotten the plane back in the air is mess up the landing,” Nolan contends.

I’m confident that with the studio pushing, Nolan will commit soon to at least writing the next film.
